Not everything your grand old lady told you was right.
Drinking tea makes the skin darker

No it does not. All forms of tea contain more antioxidants than found in fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants help prevent heart disease and cancer. However, drinking a lot of tea causes dehydration and the skin looks dry and lifeless, which is confused with darkening of skin. Adding milk to tea reduces its antioxidant effects. So if you want to reap the benefits of tea, skip the milk. The key to tapping the most benefits is having it in moderation-which roughly translates to not more than 3-4 cups a day!
Brushing with salt makes the teeth whiter

Hogwash! The bacteria create an acidic environment in the mouth for their own growth. Salt alkalinizes the mouth and hence decreases the bacteria count. So, salt makes your mouth-gums, teeth included-cleaner and healthier, not whiter. But be careful, using salt daily will make your gums swell up, so once or twice a week is enough for antibacterial action. Having less bacteria in the mouth would mean less of discoloration anyway!
Apply toothpaste on pimples

Not necessarily. Many types of toothpaste contain triclosan, an antibacterial compound, a common ingredient of acne treatment products. In addition, some toothpaste contain menthol, which dries the skin. Toothpaste can act like a facemask, drawing impurities out of the skin and also dry the skin - all this reduces the size of the pimple. But toothpaste may also contain ingredients that can irritate the skin. In some, it may cause more redness and irritation.
Rub ginger on skin and hair will grow back

No, there is no definite proof for ginger curing baldness, though ginger does help in combating hair loss. Ginger is a circulatory stimulant for the hair follicles and stimulates hair growth. It is also high in fatty acids. Fatty acids are recommended for fighting hair loss, stunted growth and thinning of hair. Using a mixture of equal quantities of ginger juice and olive oil-rubbing it into your scalp, leaving it for 15 minutes before washing it off-does wonders to the hair. Some people may be sensitive to ginger and may develop a rash. So for them, more dilution with oil is recommended.
Don't pluck grey hair or more will sprout from the area

No -plucking out grey hair does not increase their numbers. And plucking hair is not a good habit anyway. It damages the roots and may result in infection of the scalp-leading to maybe more graying or even hair loss!
Shave off your head and the new growth will be denser

Yes, the new growth of hair after shaving is always better, as is noticed on the legs and arms or elsewhere. It is the circulatory stimulation of the scalp that does the trick.
Cucumber juice is good for you

Most definitely! Cucumbers contain vitamin C which helps soothe skin irritations and reduce inflammation. This wonder vegetable contains a variety of beneficial minerals including silica, potassium and magnesium. The alkaline minerals are beneficial in stomach disorders like ulcers, urinary ailments and joint aches and pains. Silica is an essential component of healthy connective tissue, which includes muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone. Cucumber juice is also recommended to improve the complexion and health of the skin.
