Starbucks Stops Serving Alcohol in Stores
Starbucks Is Going To Stop Selling Wine And Beer
Starting today, you won't be able to get a glass of wine alongside your caramel macchiato at Starbucks. The Seattle Timesreports that the coffee chain is ending its Evenings program, which sold beer and wine at hundreds of stores nationwide.
According to , the program was running in 439 stores across the United States; it was tested in Starbucks' headquarters in Seattle in 2010 before being spread across the country. The idea was to make people want to come to Starbucks later in the day, after the need for coffee diminishes. The program didn't just feature booze, but also included tapas-style foods like bacon-wrapped dates.
Starbucks won't be completely eliminating alcohol, though. The company says they'll include it at their more upscale Roastery stores, and it may stick around at its nine licensed stores and in outlets overseas. Starbucks is planning on opening 20 or more Roasteries around the world, and six of them are set to open by 2019.
For the rest of the Starbucks stores, the company plans on adding more to its lunch lineup, because half of its foot traffic happens after 11 a.m. But it's safe to say that boozy lunches won't be on the menu anytime soon.
A Starbucks spokesperson issued the following statement:
"As a strategic priority, Starbucks focuses on innovation, meeting our customers where they are throughout their day. The Starbucks Evenings Program is an example of that innovation priority. We have been learning a lot along the way but as you heard us share at our Conference in December, with the addition of Roasteries, Reserve stores and Starbucks Reserve Bars there is an even greater opportunity to align this daypart to our premium, Reserve experience. As a result, we are going to pause the formal rollout of this program in U.S. Starbucks stores effective January 10, remove it from our current locations and integrate beer, wine and spirits into our new retail formats.
