No matter how cool the actress, it’s kind of a given in Hollywood that—when it comes to awards season—risks of the fashion variety are quietly discouraged. Yes, we’ve seen a subtle shift happen during the last year or so that have more famous women moving away from princess gowns, hair extensions, and dated updos, and toward slinky, sex-appeal-oozing gowns and undone hair and makeup. It feels more current, absolutely, but when it’s the new normal, it’s not exactly unique.

DidBrie Larsonlook absolutely flawless at the Golden Globes in a slinky, thin-strapped gold Calvin Klein gown with cutouts at the ribs? Absolutely. But so didSairose Ronan, also in glittery Calvin Klein with tiny straps and cutouts at the Oscars. DidCharlize Theronlook insane in plunging red Dior at the Oscars? 100 percent. ButKirsten Dunstalso looked like a modern sex bomb in a black strappy Valentino at the Globes. Last one: Did we thinkKate Hudson’s Globes’ look—a Michael Kors Collection bandeau and skirt—was an interesting choice? Certainly, and thenTaylor Swiftrolled up to the Grammy Awards wearing a similarly cut ensemble.

Again, these choices are beautiful and certainly more modern than a satin mermaid gown, but they’re widely accepted because everyone’s wearing them. Even if they’re not a giant hit with every critic, there’s nothing really surprising or unique about them. And as much as we understand the value of bankable starlets wearing safe choices, we’re also fascinated by those who walk red carpets wearing things that are less predictable.

To be clear, we’re not talking about the kooks who show up in body-baring chainmail dresses deliberately trying to court the press, but rather women who choose to wear things that feel new, that aren’t cliché, or that just feel really, really modern.

Here, 11 of those looks from the 2019 awards season. Cheers to these ladies for bringing thenowto the red carpet—despite the fact that the masses and so-called critics may not think they look as cool as we do.

Plenty of clueless journalists placedFlorence Welchon Grammy Awards worst-dressed lists, with many wrongly describing her drop-dead-stunning Gucci gown as "vintage." Really, people? Because any fashion girl would literally sell her firstborn down the river for the Alessandro Michele piece that's so much cooler than a slinky spaghetti-strap number or pouffy gown.

Zendayaproved once again she not only has a firm handle on personal style but—when it comes to awards shows—dresses for nobody but herself. It was a pleasure this season to see the 19-year-old toggle so seamlessly between an elegant ruffled Marchesa gown at the Golden Globes to the Bowie-esque tailored double-breasted Dsquared2 suit she wore to the Grammy Awards—and paired with an actual mullet, which takes guts.

One particular "review" calledZoe Kazan’s Critics' Choice Awards stunner "stiff and hard to walk in," and added that when "paired with a 'princess'-inspired bodice and disheveled choppy locks, Zoe appears to be uncertain in her look."

We couldn't disagree more—it's Oscar freaking de la Renta, and the actress looked cool, modern, and more "downtown" than "Hollywood." And props to her for not capitulating to long beachy waves or an overdone wavy lob.

While most other girls her age wore predictable gowns to the Critics' Choice Awards,Zoe Kravitz killed it in a Dior Couture tank top and tailored trousers.

One site quipped, "There’s a slight disconnect between the top and the pants due to the only-a-shade-off color difference and the combo of shiny and matte."Duh, that's the point. We absolutely loved it.

Yesssss,Carice van Houten. The "Game of Thrones" beauty looked like an It-girl at the Met Gala in her lovely white gown and modern silk coat—and that's a good thing.

We adored "Mad Men" actressSola Bamis’s SAG Awards gown, by designer Lola Wusu—the fit, the color, and the giant bow were chic while also being fun—something that's often missing from the red carpet. One site called it "unfortunate," while another decided it was qualified to say the dress needed "editing."

Sorry, but ifCate BlanchettorKerry Washingtonwore this, everyone would be commending her for her high-fashion risk-taking.

"Part wedding cake, part lampshade," is how one publication describedJane Fonda’s absolutely gorgeous Saint Laurent look that she wore to the Golden Globes. Ruffles are sweeping the runway the right now, and—factor in the stark-white fitted gown and pointy white pumps—the 78-year-old looked more modern than women a third of her age.

One site called "Ex's and Oh's" singerElle King’s custom Christian Siriano gown "bizarre," but we call it cool AF. She's a rock star for God's sake, and she totally looks like one.

The nerve of critics to slam Susan Sarandon for being too "old" for her "exposed" look at the SAG Awards. The 68-year-old looked sleek and sexy in her white suit–black bra combo—and her boobs looked top-notch.

First, E! red carpet reporters mistook revered costume designerSandy Powell—who hasthreeAcademy Awards, FYI—forTilda Swinton, then everybody bashed her red-carpet look. We loved her high-fashion suit and the fact that she looked 100 percent like herself on the Oscars red carpet. Fashion win.
